Neil Goodman

Through a Different Lens

September 9 - October 22, 2022

Nestled between the Pacific Ocean and the Los Padres mountains, Neil Goodman's new sculptures are based on his relocation to the Central Coast of California.

Formerly influenced by the post-industrial landscape of the South Side of Chicago and Gary, Indiana, his move to the central coast was both a departure and an arrival, an ending as well as a new beginning.

Neil Goodman

Twists and Turns

November 3 - December 30, 2017

Like numerous American artists before him, sculptor Neil Goodman has found himself struck by the light and space of the California landscape. After having called Chicago home for decades, Goodman is now a West Coaster for good. Those who’ve followed Goodman’s work over his long career would know it for the subtle notes of Midwestern industry and functionality that hover in and around his forms. Repetitious beams and hooks are bound through efficient and elegant engineering, and heavy metals are forged to defy gravity, not unlike the bridges and girders that remain in the former steel capital of nearby Gary, IN.

These industrial references are inferred in the artist’s work, rather than illustrated outright, and the content in Goodman’s sculpture lies in the way this skilled formalist captures the finer influences of perception. Via his work, Goodman suggests that the environments around us imprint our visual experiences, whether we’re conscious of it or not, and in this case those experiences reverberate throughout his artistic practice. So what happens when this environment changes? What happens when the steely, structural density of crumbled manufacturing gets replaced with that flat, mirrored SoCal light that, to quote the artist, “gives volume to the void” of valleys that slope towards a mountainous horizon? One can sense that shift of perspective in Goodman’s Turn (2017).

This towering, six-pointed bronze sculpture, Turn, was born of Goodman’s affinity for “an economy of lines.” The neat rows of California’s vineyards reflect some of that man-made orderliness so prevalent in the artist’s earlier works, but imbued with the inconsistencies of the natural world. When evaluating his own work, Goodman speaks of a perfect perceptual spot: a point somewhere in the three-dimensional viewing of the sculpture in which the positive and negative space settle within a certain harmony as a whole. In Turn, the viewers will find that this sculpture never really settles --the eye is pulled around and around, as the network of lines intersect in different patterns as one’s perspective changes.

Goodman’s is an artistic practice that is marked in its consistency, but he’s wary, as most artists are, of the plateau that accompanies getting too good at one’s own craft. The artist says that for him, “a big move is a small move,” in that the driving force of his artistic concerns is constant, with nuanced variations leading from one body of work to the next. Goodman’s sculptures are unified in this exhibition, with the presence of Turn hinting at where the artist might go in the future, providing the tension that is crucial to a practice that will continually challenge viewers’ perceptions. A sea change, this is not; but, we can think of Goodman’s oeuvre as an epic novel, and what’s happening now is, as this show’s title suggests, a plot twist that pulls us in once again.
